Not to be confused with West Roxbury, the neighborhood of Roxbury was one of the first towns in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. As such, the area has much historical significance, and plenty of landmarks to explore. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum combines an impressive garden, three floors of art galleries, and spaces for concerts and receptions, all in a venetian-style palace. The National Center of Afro-American Artists celebrates the work of the local black population, as well as that of artists from around the world. A number of walking tours led by local guides come highly recommended.
The Highland Park Garden Walk is a great way to learn about the numerous green spaces, community gardens, and farms. For a take on Boston’s jazz movement, the High Notes of Jazz Roxbury Tour is a must. The commercial center of the neighborhood, Dudley Square, carries with it a rich history. This is a good area to explore African American and Jewish culture, while enjoying local artisan shops and restaurants
